Anyone else moved from NYC to Boston? What surprised you the most?

Hey all, I’m getting ready to move from New York to Boston for work, and I’d love to hear from folks who’ve made the same move. I’ve lived in NYC for almost a decade, so the idea of starting fresh in a smaller city is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking.

I’m curious about the day-to-day differences. Things like public transportation, cost of living, neighborhood vibes, and even just how people interact. Are there any parts of Boston that feel a bit like Brooklyn or Queens? I’ve been scoping out areas like Cambridge, Somerville, and Jamaica Plain, but it’s hard to get a feel from just visiting a few times.

Also wondering what shocked you the most when you made the move. Was it the weather? The pace? The job market? I’d love to hear your take — especially if you had a love/hate relationship with New York like I do.

If you’ve made the NYC to Boston move, drop your thoughts below. What do you wish someone told you before you packed up?

I moved from NYC to Boston last year and was surprised by how much quieter and more manageable the city feels. Moving from NY to Boston really highlighted the slower pace and more compact layout. People are a bit more reserved, but still friendly. Public transportation is decent, though not as extensive. Overall, it's a refreshing change without feeling too small.
